I recommend Beginning ASP.NET in VB .NET: From Novice to Professional . It's very comprehensive, starting from the basics and working through databases and a little bit of AJAX.

I'd recommend this: Beginning ASP.NET 3.5: in C# and VB (Programmer to Programmer) (not Amazon, the book. Though Amazon is good!

It's quite long but well worth reading. Tells you how to do things correct - with the number of ways of doing things in ASP.NET it's worth doing them right.

If you're studying for an exam then you should make sure you check out the official Microsoft training kits - that way you know you haven't missed anything. You can also pay for test exams which is cheaper than resitting!
